Spring Movement

Illustrated by Jacqueline Davis Moranti

As we come out of the freezing conditions of winter and the world starts to thaw, fashion also starts to spring back to life. Gone are the thick woollies and extra layers, finally we can find
some outfits with movement and color. Layering up is great, but not when it leaves you looking like your kid sister’s stuffed bears! Spring this year is all about flow and movement, but not necessarily in the fabric. It is about allowing you to move and be comfortable. Fabrics that
are tight and stretchy are not quite the thing for all body shapes. Here are my tips for some great ideas for wardrobe essentials that help you stay loose this season.

Tunics - A tunic allows you so much movement for your upper body without fear of rising and revealing any midriffs. These great tops are long and shapely, and usually made from breathable fabrics like cotton. Choose a square bottom cut or Moroccan inspired tunic with Mandarin collar for a classy look that goes with any trousers or leggings. Alternatively, try a long hoodie tunic for a casual look that goes great with joggers or leggings too. The extra length of a tunic means you can hide your backside, and make your shape more curvaceous. For extra length, choose from some beautiful tunic dresses that will flatter every body shape and maintain your modesty too.

Tees - Long sleeve tees keep you just warm enough on a chilly spring morning. Choose extra length to cover your middle areas, in a fabric that allows enough stretch to keep your shape looking good however you move. Bold colors are definitely in, and you can also choose from a wide variety of prints. Choose a V-neck with your scarf or round neck cut with collar seam to maximize the shape of the fabric. Stretchy, active scarfs work best for this kind of casual wear.

Wide leg pants - Choosing a wide leg cut will flatter all body shapes and maintain plenty of freedom of movement. Picking lighter fabrics like cotton will allow the pants to breathe and move easily whatever activity you are into. Choose a smart, single color for pants for going to work or more formal wear. Pick some great patterns, ankle cuff designs and prints for a bit more fun or casual wear.
Skirts - The ruffle edged maxi skirt adds a touch of chic to your outfit this spring. It also adds enough weight that even the lightest fabrics will stay in place. Choose your print and choose your fabric to be light and full of movement as you move, to help you stay active and stay looking in good shape. Pick a gathered maxi skirt for the evening in silks and other soft, feminine fabrics. This timeless style works fabulously with a ruffled front top for a great night out with family or friends. Choose open toe sandals to draw the attention down toward your footwear. Make the most of color and pattern to help emphasise the movement of the fabric.

As Spring draws nearer, allow yourself to transition with the ease of comfortable key pieces. Relaxed fashion choices doesn't have to mean less than attractive ensembles! Try my suggestions to show your peers that the Winter slump hasn't kept you down! Dear readers, how will you stay "loose" this season?
