Nothing like the beat of a new tune you discovered to get you going through a workout or your work day. A hook from a song that gets lodged in your brain immediately upon hearing it, that you have to find out more details about the song/ artist. This feeling happens to me all of the time. I'm constantly discovering new music, researching the lyrics and learning more about the voice crooning it. I don't know about you, but I love a good live show, attending concerts are one of my favorite past times, when I fall hard for an artist upon discovery, I really fall hard! Sure, there are tons of sites in which one can buy their tickets from but not too many that can offer the best bang for your buck especially when you attend live shows often!
I've compiled a list of artists I'm currently loving and would love to see live, all in one show. Think of it as a sort of "Faux-chella!" My perfect musical would include Toronto duo Majid Jordan. Most people might be familiar with OVO's own Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" that song was actually co written and produced by Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman. The duo laments pop synths with a dark vocal sense. Their music has a sense of 80s revival but still adept enough to sound current, also taking notes from their mentor, the lyrics tend to contemplate on an extended conversation that sounds like it should be for a specific set of ears. Yes, they teeter on the edge of R&B but unlike other rhythm and blues acts, they have a darker and eerier soul sound that is unlike any other. Take a listen to their self titled debut album to really get a good grip of the Majid Jordan Sound!
To be completely honest, I haven't actually listened to Drake's music until recently. With the release of his latest album, Views I was intrigued by the comments my friends were telling me. I gave it a go and that's when the obsession began! Views has been number one on the Billboard charts for the past 17 weeks, obviously that says something about the music, and I can attest to that! This album is filled with various colors and dispositions, it shows his growth and risk, especially with his lyrics. Catchy, thought provoking lyrics that embed in your head as you catch yourself repeating it while you shower (Not afraid to admit that)! Every track on this album is sure to have you head bopping while driving to work/home/etc.
When it comes to listening to pure and genuine beats, I always go to Soulection for my fix. Recently, one of the label's youngest prodigies, Sam Gellaitry released his second ep and it's absolute perfection! Most of my friends think I listen to video game sounds, sure some of the beats I listen to are reminiscent to that of a Nintendo Genesis title, but Sam Gellaitry takes it to another level. The Scottish producer takes beautiful synth riffs and throbbing bass lines, twangy guitar plucks and insane percussion to sprinkle all over the album! It's really hard to pick a favorite because all of the tracks have a unified and cohesive sound with unique attention to detail.
Have you ever listened to something so good that you can't explain what genre or sound category it fits into?! The Code gives me that kind of vibe, the production duo sends out a balanced mixture of various genre bending tunes to create an experimentally minded electronica sound. The Code dangles between Alt R&B and minimalist electronica with woozy vocals and heavily layered reverbs, just listen to their latest ep, Blue Electronica to get a glimpse of what I'm talking about!
